Italy!
Hello!
Summer holidays are always a massive thing to decide. We usually go somewhere abroad in the Summer and a place in England for Easter. However, this year we have decided to change it. Italy is where we will be at Easter! I am really excited because we are going to travel around Italy on the train. In this blog entry I will write about our plans for Italy.
Firstly, we will fly out to Rome. After Rome, we travel to a coastal spot near Pompeii and then we go to Venice. We have lots of things to do in all of these three places and I am going to tell you about them. I am also going to include little tips or unusual things about going to Italy.
Tip 1- before you go to Italy, it is good to get an ice cream menu translated. Some of the types are unusual and they are quite hard to identify and you can easily confuse different flavours. For example, "Zuppa Inglese" is a custard flavoured ice cream with cookies and sherry. This tip can apply to other countries as well.
In Rome, the Colosseum is a big tourist attraction and I am particularly excited to see it. The Colosseum, otherwise known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, opened in 80AD and is still magnificent to see now. An impressive fact about the Colosseum is that it took more than 1.1 million tons of concrete, stone, and bricks to complete. I think that is amazing! Another interesting thing is to join an audience with the Pope at the Vatican. I have heard that lots of tourists gather there. Afterwards you can walk through St Peter's Basilica and it sounds really interesting.
Tip 2- apparently in Italy, putting bread down upside down is seen as bad luck and disrespectful to the owner of the table so it would probably be good not to do that!
Pompeii is the home of a very interesting place for me. There is a house belonging to Caecilius. Now, Caecilius was a wealthy merchant and he lived in Pompeii with his wife Metella, his son Quintus, his cook Grumio, his slave Clemens and his dog Cerberus. The family lived a very long time ago and their lifestyle is used as a base for the Cambridge Latin course. You can visit a replica of his house in Pompeii and I am really excited to see it. It is a replica because the real thing got destroyed by mount Vesuvius (another great place).
Tip 3- for all of those pasta lovers, there are over 100 different types of pasta and each region has its own type. They are all delicious so my tip is to try loads of pasta!
The last of my places is Venice. In Venice an exciting thing to do is to go on the grand canal tour by a boat. It is interesting because you learn all about the history of Venice. Another good place to visit is the magnificent piazza San Marco. It is a square with lots of interesting things to see. My final suggestion is a gondola ride. The picturesque waterways are very popular.
Tip 4- in Italy purple is seen as the colour of lent and it is considered a colour that brings bad luck. Avoid wearing dark purple to theatres or weddings as it may look like you are wishing them bad luck.
That sums up what I want to do this Easter in Italy.
Bye!
