Colour Meanings

Hello!
This blog entry is going to be about colour meanings because after reading a certain book, I have become more interested in it.

I read a book called Violet Ink recently. The main character's favourite colour was violet because the meanings related to her personality. Throughout the book, she wrote letters to her sister in violet ink. This got me intrigued about colour meanings. However, I found that it was not as simple as one meaning per colour. Here are some of the meanings that I have found for various colours. Before you read this please decide on one colour to class as your favourite and one that you particularly dislike! This is so that you don't pick a colour that has a nicer meaning! The choices are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, purple/violet, turquoise, pink, brown, silver, gold and black.

Red is the colour of energy, passion, action, ambition and determination. If your favourite colour is red, you are action oriented with a deep need for physical fulfilment and to experience life through the five senses.

Orange is the colour of social communication and optimism. From a negative colour meaning it is also a sign of pessimism and superficiality. If orange is your favourite colour, you have a great need to be with people, to socialize with them, and be accepted and respected as part of a group. You also have a need for challenges in your life, whether it is physical or social challenges.

Yellow is the colour of the mind and the intellect. It is optimistic and cheerful. However it can also suggest impatience, criticism and cowardice. Choosing yellow as your favourite means you have a deep need for logical order in your everyday life and to be able to express your individuality by using your logical mind to inspire and create new ideas.

Green is the colour of balance and growth. It can mean both self-reliance as a positive and possessiveness as a negative, among many other meanings. If green is your favourite, you have a deep need to belong, to love and be loved, and to feel safe and secure. You need acceptance and acknowledgment for the everyday things you do for others - just a 'thank you' is sufficient.

Blue is the colour of trust and peace. It can suggest loyalty and integrity as well as conservatism and frigidity. Lovers of blue have a deep need to find inner peace and truth, to live their life according to their ideals and beliefs without having to change their inflexible viewpoint of life to satisfy others.

Indigo is the colour of intuition. In the meaning of colours it can mean idealism and structure as well as ritualistic and addictive. Indigo lovers have a need to feel in harmony and at one with the Universe and to be accepted by others as the aware and intuitive spiritual beings that they are.

Purple is the colour of the imagination. It can be creative and individual or immature and impractical. If purple is your favourite colour, you have a deep need for emotional security and to create order and perfection in all areas of your life, including your spiritual life. You also have a deep need to initiate and participate in humanitarian projects, helping others in need.

The colour meaning of turquoise is communication and clarity of mind. It can also be impractical and idealistic. If turquoise is your favourite colour your deepest need is to create emotional balance in your life, to be able to express your hopes and dreams no matter how idealistic they may be and to make your own way in the world under your own terms.

The colour psychology of pink is unconditional love and nurturing. Pink can also be immature, silly and girlish. The colour psychology of pink is unconditional love and nurturing. Pink can also be immature, silly and girlish.

The colour brown is a friendly yet serious, down-to-earth colour that relates to security, protection, comfort and material wealth. Lovers of brown have a deep need for a safe, secure, simple and comfortable existence with supportive family and friends.

Silver has a feminine energy; it is related to the moon and the ebb and flow of the tides - it is fluid, emotional, sensitive and mysterious. If silver is your favourite, you are intuitive and insightful and have a strong connection with a higher spiritual guidance.

Gold is the colour of success, achievement and triumph. Associated with abundance and prosperity, luxury and quality, prestige and sophistication, value and elegance, the colour psychology of gold implies affluence, material wealth and extravagance. With a personality colour gold, you radiate charisma, personality and individuality, making others feel relaxed and valued in your company.

Black is the colour of the hidden, the secretive and the unknown, creating an air of mystery. It keeps things bottled up inside, hidden from the world. Lovers of black have a need for power and control in order to protect their own emotional insecurities.

So check your favourite colour with the colour meanings. Do they apply to you? No-one really knows if there is any truth in these theories but there is some evidence in psychology that the colour you choose has something to do with your feelings. My favourite colour is purple- the colour of imagination and my favourite subjects are music and English which are both creative subjects where you have to use your imagination. My research said that if my favourite colour is purple, I have a need for emotional security which doesn't really apply to me but then again it also said I have a need for perfection and I hate leaving things unfinished which perhaps leaves me as a perfectionist? The reason I asked you to pick a colour you dislike is that it can tell you more about your personality apparently. Your most disliked colour is supposed to relate to areas in your life that need to be given attention or past hurts that need to be healed. Do these colour meanings apply to you?

If you are interested in colours don't stop here. There is research that is showing that colour can affect senses. Even taste! Apparently hot chocolate tastes more flavoursome in an orange mug! Try it and tell me what you think!
Bye!
