Mary Berry's Chocolate Fork Biscuits

Hello!
I'm back today with a recipe! I've been revising a lot recently and I wanted to do some baking to relax. I made some chocolate fork biscuits and they were so delicious that I just had to share the recipe. These biscuits have quite a short crumbly texture but they melt on the tongue and have a rich chocolatey flavour. I think that they are perfect for an afternoon treat with a cup of tea. They were made with a Mary Berry recipe and like most of her other recipes, this one worked really well.

Fork biscuits only need three basic ingredients that everyone is bound to have in their cupboards. Flour, sugar and butter. I decided to add some cocoa powder and make a chocolate version, but you could always leave them plain, or add some citrus zest for flavour. Lemon or orange would work well. You could also add an extract, vanilla or almond perhaps, but I think they would be just as nice without any additional flavouring. If making a plain version, add 150g self raising flour to make up for the cocoa powder.

My main piece of advice is to make sure that the butter is at room temperature. Not chilled. Not melted. You need to be able to cream the butter with the sugar and you won't be able to do this if the butter is chilled. I don't recommend putting it in the microwave to soften it either. Just be patient and wait an hour or so because microwaving it will change the consistency and your mixture may become too wet. Apart from that, you can't really go wrong!

Chocolate Fork Biscuits
Ingredients- makes around 12 biscuits
  • 100g unsalted butter, softened
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 120g self-raising flour
  • 15g cocoa powder
Method
  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper
  2. In a bowl, cream together the butter and the sugar until light and fluffy
  3. Add the flour and cocoa powder and beat well until combined, using your hands if necessary, to bring the mixture together to form a soft dough
  4. Using your hands, roll small walnut sized balls out of the mixture and place them on the baking tray, leaving room for them to spread. I made around 12 out of the mixture
  5. Dip a fork in a little water or flour and then press into each ball to flatten them, leaving the pattern on top of each biscuit
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes
  7. Leave to cool on a wire rack and enjoy!
I hope you give this recipe a try- they are delicious!
